This thread is open to everyone but to make it easier to follow please keep all posts under 450 words. It has been decided that the description of the carnival and the way the village has been decorated will be left up to the imagination of our members so don't forget to include those tiny details if you feel like setting the scene - don't worry, we're not forcing you to describe anything xD I just didn't want to limit the scene. There is food, music and decorations. Do with it what you will but most of all have fun guys xD

PROF. L. C. CALLAGHAN____
He loved the autumn when it wasn’t howling a gale or throwing down the rain in buckets; the lingering sunshine and residual heat were nice, even if scarves were beginning to be required as the evenings closed in earlier each night (he doubted whether it would broach 6 o’clock without the gas lamps being lit and casting their flickering shadows across the cobbled streets). Hogsmeade was especially picturesque with its festive decorations: Lance was particularly enjoying the tap-dancing skeletons’ rehearsals for their involvement later on in the evening, nodding his head in time to the rhythm produced by their bones.
He hadn’t dressed-up, deciding that was something for the students to do and that he was clearly far too mature and responsible for such behaviour. He kept telling himself this, resisting the urge that his hand seemed to have to twitch his wand and conjure some kind of costume up right there. Besides, he didn’t particularly want people looking at him, he was still getting used to the idea of people about the school knowing his name not for his professional Quidditch career, but as a teacher and a colleague. And as such, he felt mildly responsible for the well being of the populace of the town (even though there were no staff officially “on duty”), descended upon by so many students who were duty-bound to cause a ruckus. He cast another cursory glance over those who had ventured down early, returning a smile and a wave to a group of Fourth year girls who tittered and dived inside the book-shop with haste – he had to admit, it was an ego boost to be able to insight such behaviour (even if it was just encouraging their silly girlish crushes).
Lance meandered over to Honeyduke’s and perused the window, all too aware of the suspicious looks that he was being thrown from the students inside, clearly under the impression that he was checking up on them – even though he was one of the staff who would probably let them away with the most, kids being kids and all that. He observed the black gummy bats that flittered around in the display, his craving for sugar greatly playing against his want to appear nonchalant with regards to the students: if he entered the shop the suspicion would just be heightened, but lingering was probably worse.
So he caved in, and emerged moments later with an envious amount of sweets filling his pockets – feeling smug and exactly like he was eight years old again after a night of guising (though even more so due to the fact that these sweets had only required money to be obtained and no costume nor party-trick needed).

Laila loved Halloween. It was as simple as that. She always loved getting dressed up - no matter what time of year it was, so Halloween at least gave her some kind of excuse. Not that Laila needed one. She was definitely the kind of girl who would simply pull on a strange costume just to wear to class. It always sparked rumors and made the girls and boys giggle at her. Laila didn't mind. It wasn't the attention she liked. Nor was she trying to be so different than everyone else than she became the topic of conversation. It was just amazed her at how much just being herself caught other people's attention. So tonight Laila was dressed up as a pumpkin. Who cared if she looked like a five year old? She didn't care. It was a costume Laila had found in an old muggle costume store back home and decided it was just her style. She was currently wandering the streets of Hogsmeade. She was with no one in particular since most of her friends had subtly tried to ditch her once they'd seen what she was dressed as. Most had in fact chosen to ditch the outfits as well. Everyone was just too mature for that kind of thing. Laila rolled her eyes at this kind of reasoning. She was still young so why not have a little fun. She hoped she was still like this as she got older. As Laila's feet pulled her forward she decided maybe she would go check out Honeyduke's. It was her brother's favourite store and she knew he didn't visit Hogsmeade much so maybe she could pop her head in and get some for him. As Laila passed by the windows of the sweet store she got distracted by the magic treats in the window and forgetting to draw her eyes away from the window she ran straight into somebody else. "Oh my gosh!" she cried looking up to see she had run into one of the Hogwarts Professors. "Oh my gosh I'm so sorry!"

Halloween was a favorite time of Lycoris. It was the one time of year that you could dress up as whatever you wanted, and not get teased. A small smile was plastered to the blonde's face as she put on her costume. Lycoris had no idea where she had the thought to dress up as she did, but it seemed kinda unique. The thought of dressing up as a witch, muggle style, had crossed her mind as well, but Cori decided otherwise. Her hair took the longest to do, because it was having a day where it wouldn't cooperate properly, but soon enough Cori had tricked it into staying up, and then placed the ringlet of leaves around her head. She was especially excited because the students were allowed to go to Hogsmead that night to enjoy the festivities. Cori rushed, as soon as she was ready, to get there, so as to have as much time possible in the town. Once lycoris arrived in the town, the smile just would not leave her face. The town was covered in decorations, it was amazing. She wandered around alone for awhile, taking all the sights in. On her wanderings though, she saw one of her friends bump into someone just outside of Honeydukes. With a shake of her head and a short laugh Lycoris made her way over to the sweetshop, thinking about poping into the store as well as saying hi to her friend. "Laila you nut, bumping into people." She beamed at her friend before turning to the professor, recognising him as the flying coach. She nodded her head towards him with a small smile.

PROF. L. C. CALLAGHAN____
His fingers clenched around the top of the orange and black striped bag, his Quidditch player’s reactions not having left him yet – any collision required one to hold on to whatever one was holding, no matter the circumstances (and these were very important circumstances – a sugar-fix was at stake). “Y’alright love?” he chimed with a slight laugh and shake of his head as he dismissed her apology as unrequired, the impact of her small frame against his not effecting his balance nearly so much as it did the girl’s yet he could see (what with the amount of padding that she had donned) that she was little the worse for wear. He supposed “love” wasn’t a very appropriate term for a teacher to be using towards a student, but it was a habit of his countrymen – he was also terrible with names.
“Y’know yer a pumpkin not a bowlin’ ball, right?” he intoned with an amused smile still lingering about his expression, after the second student had come up to chide her friend – nope, he didn’t know that one’s name either; although at least she had given away the first one’s name in the process. Laila, Laila, Laila. he thought to himself, trying to get the name to stick for at least the night should he happen to run into her again.
He looked then to the second girl, not quite so flamboyantly dressed as her counterpart – though still at least in the mood of things, not afraid to dress up and disregard the regular rules for being seen in public. It really wasn’t helping his “remain out of costume” mentality. “You girls havin’ fun so far then..?” he offered a little awkwardly, unsure exactly how they felt about extra-curricular conversations with members of staff.

Laila was a clutz. There was no other way to describe it. She was constantly bumping in things, both objects and people. Always tripping over her shoelaces even when she didn't have any shoes on. It was just inevitable. So, in her seventeenth year of life Laila was quite used to running things down. But never before had she run into a professor. "Professor Callaghan I'm so sorry." she said again, looking up at him and smiling. "I'm fine. Good really. Just lost my balance. Kind of. Are you alright? I didn't hurt you or anything?" Laila was rambling. She was also pretty good at doing that.
Before she had time to gather herself they were joined by another student. She grinned at Lycoris. "Cori!" She was happy to be in the prescence of a friend. "Oh my gosh, shut up. I know right. I just can't help it." She looked sheepishly up at Callaghan, still worried she'd hurt him. Laila giggled at his comment, "At least if I had been a bowling ball I could have had an excuse for almost knocking you straight off your feet." She grinned and started to feel less nervous. While this kind of thing may have happened all the time, the poor girl still couldn't help her cheeks from flushing pink occasionally. At least now they were starting to return to their normal colour. "I'm quite enjoying the scene," she said in response to Callaghan, "and I can see you're enjoying to lollies." She kept herself from giggling as she noticed the amount of sweets the professor had gotten himself.

Cori beamed at Laila's response. It had been ages since she had seen her, you know, summer and then getting back into the school year and all. It took its toll for sure. "Least you had a pumpkin around you to save from too much damage." She smirked slightly, then listened to the exchange between the professor and her friend. It was a true fact, at least if she had been a bowling ball she would have had an excuse.
The next comment that Cori heard was directed at both of them. She turned to professor Callaghan and smiled "I havn't seen much yet, but so far I cannot complain." She nodded at what Laila had said about the lollies and smiled sweetly. "Anything good for candy this year?" She then looked into the window at Honeydukes and saw all the students that were currently in there. She made a mental note that candy would have to wait a short bit, until it cleaned out just a little bit.

PROF. L. C. CALLAGHAN____
He chuckled quietly, to himself more than for any one else’s benefit, at Laila’s struggle to find exactly the words that she was looking for – not that he was laughing at her, of course not, merely attempting to keep the mood light and make her feel better by showing that he was in no way angry at her. “Ach, accidents happen,” he smiled, adding in a stage whisper, “Take more’n that to mess with me. Tough as old boots.” He rapped on his own chest with his free fist, a decisive nod added for good measure.
Cori. Hmm. he racked his brains to think of a situation where he would have known the face and the name in conjunction with one another. Lycoris – of course. An unusual name like that shouldn’t be so easily forgotten (although of course, unusual names were a habit of the students at Hogwarts, he himself would probably have been classed in that grouping during his school days); but Lance was a visual learner, and the fact that her name was not spelt in the manner to which he was used to seeing the word made him forgetful of it.
He couldn’t help but laugh a little as she explained his joke and Lycoris replied in a likewise manner, he forgot sometimes that unless people were well acquainted with his mannerisms then his particular brand of humour was often too subtle or obscure for many to grasp straight away. “Ah well, even us old timers gotta have a bit of fun on the holiday, y’know? Can’t get away with the get-up the likes of yourselves got on.” he responded to her quip, clicking his fingers with a shake of his head, looking disappointed at the thought – although appearing mocking, his expression held a little bit of genuine sadness at this (even though he wouldn’t have classed himself as “old”, he knew that the students probably thought 27 was beyond ancient – even by the terms of their usual staff ages). “Quite liking these bats,” he grabbed one from the bag, holding onto the string that was tied around its jelly neck, “though not too sure I trust the flavour. Blackcurrant and pumpkin might not be the best of combinations... still, they look pretty enough. Interest you in a couple?” he offered the bag across to the students, still eyeing the one he had removed with a morbid fascination – deciding whether to give it a go.
Somewhere beyond his vision at the top of the high street, a band started up playing a plinky-plonky song upon a vaguely out of tune piano with an accompanying voice, though he couldn’t make out the words from this distance.

As much as Laila had no problem being alone, in fact a lot of the time that was how she liked things, she always enjoyed unexpected company. She smiled between both the professor and her friend as exchanges were made. Laila patted her pumpkin proudly at Cori's comment. "Least you had a pumpkin around you to save from too much damage." "Always knew I'd need it for something." she grinned and looked up at Callaghan. He was much taller than she. Although this was not hard considering how small she truly was. "I don't think age should stop people from wearing what they want. Seriously. When I grow up, even if I'm old and wrinkly, I'm still going to be wearing my pumpking costume." At least that was the plan. "Well, maybe not this particular suit but you know what I mean. Age is no restriction, sir."
Laila heard the band start up again. They'd been playing earlier and had only just realised they had gone quiet for a while. A rest or break of some sort before they started up again. Subconsciously Laila began to tap her foot and nod her head slightly in time with the music. "The bats are amazing. I remember I had some last year. Although, I can't say I've ever tried the blackcurrant and pumpkin bats." Eagerly, Laila still reached her hand into the bag and pulled one out. "Thanks sir." As the music started to get louder Laila could see crowds of people heading towards the place where it came from. She grabbed hold of Cori's hand "Come on, let's go." She started to turn away, but turned her head back over her shoulder, "Come on Professor Callaghan, let's go check it out."

Cori glanced at her friend as she was patting the pumpkin suit proudly and laughed a little, shaking her head with a grin. Only someone like Laila couldl pull off a pumpkin at this age and get away with it. "Truly unique you are" She said, before turning back to the professor to listen to the next exchange. True story, adults could dress up too. She had seen pictures from the muggle world where adults dress up to give the children who come to their house some candy. "Laila's right dude, your never too old to dress how you choose to." She had said dude without thinking, just using her normal speech. But then Cori also figured that he wouldn't care, he seemed very relaxed, unlike some of the olders professors.
Hmm, music. Cori aparently was not paying as much attention to her surroundings as she normally did. Did that just start back up? Or had it been playing the whole time and she had been too distracted to notice it? She went witht he just started up idea and smiled. It didn't sound too bad at all, better than some musicians. Her attention was brought back to the two people infront of her when the professor asked if they wanted to try one of the bats. Cori looked at the one that he held in his hand warrily. It looked kinda trippy, but the flavors did not sound too appearling to her. With a quick thought Cori shrugged. "Sure, why not. I'll try one." She reached into the bag that he held out to them and smiled softly up at him. "Thanks." Not long after that she felt Laila grab her hand to drag her off to probably go see the music. She laughed and nodded eagerly "Ya, lets go check these guys out. Wonder if they are goblins." She grinned, imagining the small people playing instruments.

PROF. L. C. CALLAGHAN____
Now that he was put on the spot, he wasn’t particularly sure that he wanted to be in costume – feeling much less self-concious in what he was already wearing. He supposed he could have donned as shirt and tie and gone as a pupil, but with a little further thought on the matter he decided that that wasn’t really as funny as he had first thought that it might have been. “But havin’ people laugh at y’is.” he retorted, “Some o’ye might’ve been around long enough t’get away wit’ it – but I don’t think that 2 months is gonna have been enough time. Got a reputation t’make first.” He nodded decisively with a grin, straightening the collar of his jacket and adjusting the sleeves down. “Dude” took him a little by surprise, it just seemed so odd a word not to hear from an American – although admittedly it did sound better in Lycoris’ accent than it did in his – or perhaps he really was as old and the gap between himself and the students was as wide as he feared it to be.
But his fears were rebutted as he was invited along with the students to listen to the band – although with hindsight he supposed it may have been out of politeness rather than anything else that he hadn’t just been abandoned. “A’right then,” he conceded with a shrug, hanging back a little however from the pair of friends (however comfortable they might have been around him, he couldn’t help but wonder how bad the scenario might have looked from a cynical outsider’s view point). “Wouldn’ count on it Lycoris,” he answered the Ravenclaw, “goblins got a terrible sense of rhythm. Though who knows, maybe these ones been taking lessons from the Weird Sisters or that...” he shoved his hands into the pockets of his jeans as he walked, feet falling in time with the music in a subconcious manner and head beginning to bob in time to the song.

Laila grinned. To her, unique was a compliment. She didn't strive to be different, she didn't even work hard on it. When Laila got up in the morning and put on her clothes she always seemed different to the other girls, even when they were all dressed the same. Something about her was always just a little peculiar. At least she was a girl confident in her own skin. She vaguely listened to what Callaghan was saying. If he didn't want to dress up that was his choice. Laila wasn't going to continue the matter, it really wasn't that big a deal. She liked to dress up, other people didn't. It was about being comfortable. "I think their music is peculiar," Laila added to the conversation, glancing back at the professor, "It makes it interesting to listen to. Fun to dance to. I don't think everything needs to sound perfect. Everything would be so boring. I think that's why I love music from this world. Everything in the muggle world is just the same thing over and over again." They walked towards the band that was playing and half danced, half walked as they went.

Cori scoffed at what the prof had said. Reputation to make? Boy was he knew. "You just need to earn respect. Use the big boy voice" She laughed at that, picturing in her mind telling that to a child. "We students arn't that bad, are we?" She took into considering just how much a pain students could be, disobeying the rules all the time and such. Maybe they were that bad....
Lycoris laughed at what was next said about goblins and their terrible sense of rhythm. Too true that was. Cori turned her attention to Laila as she spoke about the music here compared to the muggle world. She nodded. "Our music is pretty awesome. Not to mention the fact that we have toads as part of the school's choir club.... Magical music is awesome."

PROF. L. C. CALLAGHAN____
He cocked an eyebrow at the Ravenclaw’s comment, now she was verging on cheek – and with any other professor that might have been a bad thing, but Lance was savvy enough to see that cheek was simply a way of showing a high level of comfort around a person; and he was all for being akin to a friend to the students. Besides, for the mean time, he was just another human being, no rank or regulations dictating his or anyone else’s actions. He laughed a little at her next comment, “Y’don’ even know the half ‘f it... The things I could tell you...” He trailed off, knowing full well that he couldn’t discuss students with their peers – confidentiality and that – but dangling the bait for further conversation and bond building. In place of continuing the sentence, he reached into the bag of sweets and withdrew some crunchy looking fake spiders, throwing a small handful back into his mouth, chewing thoughtfully for a moment as he considered them.
“Weeeell, you ladies got a point,” he conceded as he thought over the things that magical music could do that Muggle music just couldn’t – the layers and the instruments and the ability for pieces to create an actual atmosphere and properly evoke emotions in people through enchantments and so forth. “But still, you can’t say no to a good bit of the ‘Stones or Bowie...” His Muggle heritage was clearly in evidence as he mentioned the pair of classic bands from the Muggle world, it was the music that he’d been brought up on so nostalgia played a part in what he enjoyed. Not that he was closed to the music of the Wizarding world, he just didn’t seem to have the time for it when surrounded by magic (only really listening to anything when he was at home with his family). He wondered whether the girls would even know who such artists were, the music being before their time (and before his as well, now that he thought on it) – he would have to do some educating if they didn’t, perhaps play them in the background of his classes on the old gramophone he had seen floating around.
Reaching the top of the road, the paved area opening out to a small square, the main festivities area met them – decorated every inch for the holiday in the colours of autumn and a variety of enchanted items to add to the spooky feel of the place.
